What is gel nail polish?
Gel nail polish, also known as gel polish or UV nail polish, combines the easy application of regular nail polish with the durability of gel. The polish does not air-dry; it only cures when placed under UV or LED light. This means you can use your hands as usual as soon as you are finished.
What is the difference between base coat, gel nail polish and top coat?
The three products work together as a system. A base coat helps the color adhere properly and protects the natural nail. The gel nail polish adds the color. Finally, a top coat seals everything in and gives either a glossy, matte or glittery finish.
What do I need to get started?
The easiest option is to start with one of our Starter Kits, where all the essentials are included. At a minimum, you will need:
- A UV/LED lamp to cure the polish
- Base coat and top coat
- Gel nail polish in your favorite colors
- Nail file, buffer, cuticle pusher and cleanser for preparation
How to apply gel nail polish at home
Good preparation is half the battle. Gently push back the cuticles, file the nails into shape and lightly buff the surface. Cleanse the nail with cleanser to remove dust and oils, and we recommend using a primer as the first step for better adhesion.
Then apply a thin layer of base coat and cure it in the lamp. Apply the color in two thin layers, curing each layer separately. Finish with top coat and cure again. Remember to cap the free edge with each layer, so the polish does not lift from the edge.
Why does my gel nail polish chip?
Most often, this is because cuticle residue or oils are left on the nail plate, or because the layers are too thick to cure all the way through. Thin layers, thorough cleansing and capped free edges provide the best durability.
How long does a gel manicure last?
With good preparation and correct application, a manicure with gel nail polish typically lasts 2 to 3 weeks. The nail grows during that time, so it is usually the regrowth that makes you feel ready for a new look.
How do I remove gel nail polish gently?
File off the glossy surface of the top coat, place a cotton pad with gel remover on the nail and leave it on for around 10 to 15 minutes. Then gently push off the dissolved gel with a cuticle pusher or an orangewood stick without pressing on the natural nail.
