What are gelish nails?
Gelish nails are manicures created with a special type of gel nail polish that cures under a lamp. Unlike older types of manicure, Gel Polish does not dry in the air. Instead, it remains wet and workable until you cure it under a light source, which hardens the product in seconds. This gives you a durable surface that is highly resistant to scratches, chipping and peeling.
What is the difference between gelish nails and other gel nails?
The term is often used to describe durable manicures made with flexible Gel Polish. While other gel nails might use thicker builder gels to build length, Gel Polish is applied similarly to a classic colour coat but cured under a lamp for long-lasting strength.
Can you do a salon-quality home gel manicure?
Yes, you can easily achieve a neat salon look at home. With the right tools and a little practice, your manicure can last for up to 3 weeks. The secret lies in thorough preparation and applying thin, even layers.
How to get started with your home gel manicure
Doing your own nails is both fun and simple when you have the right equipment. To get a durable result, you need a few important prep and application products.
What do you need in a beginner gel nail kit?
To start your nail journey, a basic gel nail kit should include:
- A nail file and buffer to shape and prep the nail surface
- A cuticle pusher to clear the nail plate
- Dehydrator and Primer to ensure the gel adheres well
- Base Coat to protect the natural nail and create a strong bond
- Your favourite Gel Polish colour
- Top Coat to seal the colour and provide a glossy or matte finish
- A uv led nail lamp to cure each layer
Do you need a uv led nail lamp to cure gelish nails?
Yes, a lamp is necessary. Gel Polish contains special ingredients that only harden when exposed to UV or LED light. We recommend using a high-quality uv led nail lamp to ensure each layer cures safely and completely. Most layers cure in 60 seconds under an LED lamp.
Preparation and application step-by-step
Good preparation is the most important step for a manicure that lasts. If you skip the preparation, the gel may lift or peel after just a few days.
- Push back your cuticles gently and remove any dead skin from the nail plate.
- File your nails to your preferred shape and gently buff the surface to remove the natural shine.
- Apply Dehydrator to remove moisture and oil, then apply Primer for optimal adhesion.
- Apply a thin layer of Base Coat and cure it in the lamp for 60 seconds.
- Apply 2 thin layers of your chosen Gel Polish colour, curing each layer for 60 seconds.
- Finish with a layer of Top Coat and cure it for 60 seconds to lock in the shine.
Why are dehydrator and primer necessary for gel nails?
Natural nails contain moisture and oils that prevent Gel Polish from bonding properly. A dehydrator removes these surface oils, while a primer acts like double-sided tape between your natural nail and the Base Coat. Using both products helps prevent lifting and ensures your manicure lasts longer.
How do you safely remove your gel nails?
To protect your natural nails, never scrape or peel the gel off. Instead, gently buff the shiny surface of the Top Coat to break the seal. Soak a cotton pad in Gel Remover, place it on the nail and wrap it in foil. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes until the gel softens, then gently scrape it away with a cuticle pusher. You can also use our Magic Remover, which breaks down the gel directly on the nail in just a few minutes.
